The Land of Crazy or…. ? [CR1]

The Land of Crazy or…. ? [CR1]
Rumors are flooding my inbox. Most of which I cannot substantiate to any degree. I figured it would be fun to post the most recent “roadmap” type of rumors.
Some of the below stuff has appeared on other rumor sites, as well as various blogs and tweets I’ve seen. I’ll give you my opinion on this stuff at the bottom.
August 2011 7D Mark II
  • 24 Mega pixel Full Frame
  • Dual Digic V
  • Will be a partial replacement for the discontinued 1D Mark IV
September 2011 1D Mark V
  • 32 Mega pixel Full Frame
  • Dual Digic V
  • Will be a partial replacement for the discontinued 1D Mark IV and complete the merging of the 1D line
March 2012 5D Mark III
  • 32 Mega pixel Full Frame
  • Digic V
  • New 11 point AF system
  • Will have the best video features of the EOS line
CR’s Take7D Mark II being a fullframe camera and “partially” replacing the  1D Mark IV? Not likely for a couple of reasons.
  • The model name “7D” would go against Canon’s naming strategy. I can’t see a Mark II of the current camera, overtaking the 5D Mark III in pricepoint and features. Name this camera “3D” and it makes sense. It was said the 70D would move to where the 7D current sits, an APS-C camera with lots of features above the Rebel. There could be some truth to that, the price difference between the 60D and T3i is tiny. I’m going to wager that any 7D direct replacement will remain an APS-C camera.
  • The other issue I see with this theory is folks that currently have a 7D with EF-S lenses. A lot of 7D buyers are very likely to have purchased a 10-22 and/or a 17-55 f/2.8 IS, not allowing them to bring their lenses to a Mark II version would be silly.
The 1D/1Ds merger talk comes around a fair bit. I do believe it’s going to happen. When? Not sure.
5D Mark III not until 2012? There has been A LOT of talk in regards to the release of the 5D Mark III. Everything recently has said it will be announced next year. Next year is a Photokina year, although I’m not sure that influences Canon’s marketing. There is going to be a lot of talk about the camera, and none of the regulars that are correct have sent me any information.
One constant remains from the stream of stuff I’m receiving, there will be a shakeup in the lineup.

3D (Again) & 5D Mark III (CR1)

3D (Again) & 5D Mark III (CR1)
From an outside source
According to information received by [NL], early 2012 will bring a new model full frame DSLR to the Canon lineup. The likely name will be the 3D. It will bring about new sensor technology for the EOS system.
The 5D Mark III wouldn’t make an appearance on the scene until summer 2012. It will feature a modified version of the upcoming 1Ds Mark IV sensor.
CR’s TakeAs mentioned over at NL, the 3D rumormill comes and goes and has done so for a long time. Although, this does go along with the idea of a split in the 5D line and the amalgamation of the 1D/1Ds.
I wouldn’t discount this one completely, but I’d have some sea salt handy.

The Future of the 1Ds & 5D Lines [CR2]

The Future of the 1Ds & 5D Lines [CR2]
Happiness coming?I’m told there will be a shakeup in the Canonlineup by the end of 2011.
1Ds SeriesWe’ve talked about the amalgamation of the 1D and 1Ds line in the past, the next 1Ds may prove to make that talk a reality. I’m told that there will be no more 1D after the next 1Ds.
Does that mean the next 1Ds will do what the current 1D does? Or will the 1D Mark IV remain current until a 1Ds Mark V? I’m unsure at the moment.
It was also suggested APS-H in the EOS line is finished.
“5D” SeriesI call it “series” due to the suggestion of a split in the 5D lineup.
A 5D Mark III with advanced video features and a 5D Mark III for stills?
Canon has yet to directly monetize video capabilities in DSLRs. Yes, the 5D2 is a bigtime video performer, but the camera wouldn’t cost less if it didn’t shoot video. If Canon does away with the 1D line of cameras, there will be a price hole that a video feature rich camera could fit into.
CR’s TakeAll plausible and I’m sure I will hear a lot more about these ideas. It doesn’t make sense in my mind to have 2 EOS-1 bodies in the lineup, the number of these they sell compared to the 5D Mark II is minuscule.
I wonder about technology though, can you offer a 9fps+ capability in a 30+mp camera? There’s lots of technical people that know better than I do.
Splitting the “5″ series camera for stills and video has been asked for by a lot of still photographers who don’t care about video. You won’t see a 5D Mark III still camera with basic video features costing less than the current 5D Mark II, but a 5D Mark III with advanced video features will surely attract a lot of buyers even if it’s at a premium.
I’m willing to wager Canon could sell a lot more 5D Mark III “video editions” than 1D Mark Vs.

1Ds Mark IV & 3 Lenses in August?

1Ds Mark IV & 3 Lenses in August?
1Ds Mark IV before 5D Mark III?We’re told August will be a major announcement month. The 1Ds Mark III replacement and 3 lenses will be announced. No detail into what lenses.
5D Mark III to follow soon after according to a few folks.
It probably won’t be until July when we started getting solid stuff with specs and a clearer picture of what’s coming down the immediate pipeline.
7D replacement? Not until well into 2012 at the earliest. You can buy it, it’s a great camera.

5D Mark III [CR1]

5D Mark III [CR1]
Spec rumorsI haven’t heard much about a 5D Mark III in a while, but I did receive some specs this AM. Might as well post them!
It was stressed that below is one prototype, and two others exist.
Specifications
  • 32mp
  • ISO 100-25600 (L1, H1, H2, H3)
  • DIGIC V
  • 4.2fps
  • 19point AF
  • CF Card

  • New autofocus while filming, performance unknown.
  • All the standard video stuff.

This is apparently coming before any 1Ds replacement.

5D Mark III & More

5D Mark III & More
In the wild? There’s word that Canon is sending out test bodies of the next 5D to various key photographers. Obviously they’ll be under a veil of secrecy. Once this happens, we tend to start getting better information.
There’s a thought the next 5D will not push megapixels, but will in fact push image quality and noise reduction. There will be a lot more sharpness and detail at higher ISO. The 26-28 megapixel range is becoming the resolution I keep getting told.
There is apparently a couple of different prototypes in existence.
What’s for certain is it will have a 19 point AF, no word on how many crosstype sensors.
1Ds Mark IV /  1D Mark VThe same person alluded to the merging of the 1D line being sooner than expected. There would need to be some new tech in a  merged 1D to keep the 10fps of the 1D and the resolution of the 1Ds. It should be interesting.

26.4mp 5D Mark III Mid-year? [CR1]

26.4mp 5D Mark III Mid-year? [CR1]
A new 5D Mark III rumor popped up on [CGG] this weekend.
Specifications
  • 26.4 million effective pixels
  • ISO expandable to 102,400
  • 19 point AF system, 3 cross-type points
  • DIGIC 5
  • 4.9 fps continuous shooting
  • 63-zone iFCL metering
  • 1.04 million dot LCD
  • Improved camera grip
  • Improved pentaprism, approximately 100% frame coverage

All the specs are reasonable and almost expected.
All other info I’ve received has said 30+ mp and 7D AF. No word on video specs yet.

DIGIC V [CR1]

DIGIC V [CR1]
The next EOS & PowerShot processorIt has been a long time since we spoke about or saw an updated DIGIC processor in a CanonCamera. It seems DIGIC IV has been around for a long time, 2008 to be exact.
I was told today that DIGIC V has been in development for at least 4 years. A lot has changed during its development because of the explosive success of the 5D Mark II and HD video.
Features of the next DIGIC Processor
  • Still and video noise reduction that will be industry revolutionary (I like that word)
  • The most throughput on the market
  • Dynamic range improvements, unknown to what extent
  • New video codec. RAW video is unknown, but the throughput will attainable
  • New liveview AF abilities, unknown whether that will affect video AF
  • New “creative” tools for new DSLR and compact features

NAB Report – New DSLR Soon? [CR1]

NAB Report – New DSLR Soon? [CR1]
[NL] and I may have been sent the same info about an upcoming DSLR announcement.
Apparently a new “pro” camera will be announced in the next month. One of the key features is said to be the very wanted continuous focus in video mode.
No word whether or not it’s a 1Ds or a 5D2 replacement.
CR’s TakeI can’t imagine a 1Ds getting the top video features first. In my opinion the camera is too big, cumbersome and expensive for mass market video. A 5D3 would be more than capable of being the flagship video HDSLR.
The best information I have so far about the 1Ds replacement is it being a medium format competitor, to me that says minimal focus on video features.
My $0.02 anyway, and it doesn’t cost much more than that to change my mind.

5D Mark III & 7D Mark II Within a Month! [CR0]

5D Mark III & 7D Mark II Within a Month! [CR0]
Two DPR Rumors in one Week![1K1] posted a [DPR] rumor about a 5D Mark III and 7D Mark II being announced within a month.
Enjoy the spelling mistakes. :)
My local dealer, media markt, claims that the new 5d3 and 7d2 will be announced within a month and in the shelves this summer. The sales representative was so sure and convincing that I am selling my 5d2 before the price drops. He claimed the sales team already prepares for the rush of totally 7 new models/updates from Canon and Nikon, and that the new add’s from media markt are being prepared formthis as we speek!
CR’s TakeNot likely. I think I’ll see a 200-400 f/4L IS 1.4x before I see a 7D Mark II.
I know of two dealers that have advanced knowledge of some product announcements, and by advanced… I mean about 48 hours.
File this under “grain of salt bigger than a Bentley”
